Mission Taco Joint is expanding in a big way.
The popular West Coast-style taco concept has announced plans to open a new location at 105 E. Jefferson Street (the former home of Kirkwood Station Brewing Co.) in Kirkwood, Missouri, in early 2020.
This will be the seventh location for Mission Taco, which operates four locations in the St. Louis area and two in Kansas City. At 12,000 square feet, the Kirkwood location will also be the brand's largest, featuring a tortilla production line where diners can watch how masa is made into tortillas, alongside a private event space and an arcade bar.
Along with 16 vintage arcade games, six pinball machines and four Skee-Ball machines, the arcade portion of the space will feature a separate, fast-casual test kitchen offering new grab-and-go dishes and a bar serving experimental cocktails. Chef Jason Tilford, who owns the concept with his brother, Adam Tilford, said in release that the test kitchen will focus on masa-centric dishes, such as empanadas, tamales, sopes and Mexico City-style quesadillas. "[They are] dishes that can be portable and easy to eat while playing games," he said.
"We will be exploring that same philosophy with the small bar... We will have signature drinks like our Mission Margarita and Paloma, but we will also feature new creations from our beverage team, led by beverage director Kyle Harlan."
Mission Taco is working with local firm SPACE Architecture + Design on the interior, which will be divided straight down the middle. The left side will feature a main dining room and bar with approximately 132 seats (as well as a 60-person private event space available for parties, rehearsal dinners and baby showers), while the right side will be home to the arcade bar, test kitchen and second bar. Additional seating will also be available on a front patio.
"We are going to be able to have some fun with the space, especially on the arcade side," co-owner Adam Tilford said in a release. "While our normal menu of Mission Taco Joint favorites will be available in the main dining room, the test kitchen in the Mission Arcade will be a place for our team to experiment with dishes that could potentially roll out to our other locations."
