In the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of south city St. Louis, a new restaurant serves up authentic Mexican cuisine. Sol Azteca opened on Dec. 12, serving up from-scratch huaraches, quesadillas, pambazos and more.

The name of the casual restaurant, which translates from Spanish to “Aztec sun,” references owner Jesus Rojas’ Mexican roots. The Mexico City native came to St. Louis 16 years ago, where he began cooking professionally in various American-style restaurants. His first foray into business ownership is a family-run endeavor with his wife, Erika.

“I live in this area and it seemed like a good idea to open a restaurant here since there isn’t any Mexican food in the neighborhood. The closest thing is Cherokee Street,” Jesus says. “We wanted to offer something different. The food is very authentic, from Mexico City.”

The casual, family-friendly eatery, located in a strip mall, has around 46 seats and a festive, colorful interior. Decor includes art and tapestries from south of the border.

From the menu, choose from appetizers such as Azteca Nachos with tortilla chips, cheese sauce, beans, pico de gallo, chorizo, chicken and steak. Salad options include a fajita taco salad with a tortilla shell, bell peppers, onions, lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, Cheddar jack cheese, and steak or chicken.

One of Sol Azteca’s signatures is its big quesadilla, featuring a large oblong fresh homemade corn tortilla with Cheddar jack cheese, lettuce, sour cream and red onions. Choose from steak, chicken or chorizo to top it all off. The huarache is another specialty, with a large, thick homemade Mexican corn tortilla topped with refried beans, salsa verde, lettuce, queso fresco, sour cream, avocado slices and your choice of meat.

Tacos are also available, topped with fresh cilantro, onions, your choice of salsa and asada, pastor or chorizo. Additional offerings include a green enchilada, which consists of three corn tortillas filled with shredded chicken, topped with salsa verde, onion, cilantro, sour cream and queso fresco, served with rice and guacamole salad.

Entrees including sizzling fajitas and carne asada, or alternatively, opt for a sandwich. Tortas include options such as a pambazo with chorizo, mashed potatoes, lettuce, green sauce, fresh cheese and sour cream. Upcoming additions to the menu include fried fish, chile rellenos, cochinita pibil (pork marinated with red onions and peppers) and steak enchiladas served with red sauce, cheese and green sauce in the form of a Mexican flag.

For dessert, choose from fried ice cream, sopapilla with ice cream and flan Napolitano. Beverages include Jarritos, horchata, bottled beer, Margaritas and sangria.

Sol Azteca is open Sunday through Thursday from 10am to 9pm, Friday through Saturday from 10am to 10pm.
