Downtown St. Louis will soon have a new destination for late-night tacos.
The owners of El Burro Loco, which opened in the Central West End in early 2015, plan to open La Bamba at 1101 Lucas Ave. this spring.
The sister restaurant will offer a menu similar to El Burro Loco, including a mix of Tex-Mex favorites and more authentic Mexican dishes. To that end, look for favorites from El Burro Loco including chimichangas, enchiladas and fajitas to make their way to La Bamba. Dishes on the more traditional side of the menu are still in development, but diners can expect to see al pastor prepared on a rotisserie. "It's sort of like how Greek restaurants will do gyros," says Jaime Hernandez, who co-owns the restaurant with Fernando Mendieta. "We're really excited about that."
El Burro Loco is known for its expansive drink program, and guests can expect a similar selection at La Bamba. Hernandez says the restaurant will offer more dozens of Margaritas, plus 350 different tequilas and mezcals.
Despite that, Hernandez says La Bamba will be a bit more laid back than El Burro Loco. "It will be more of a casual dinner spot than a party place," he says. The restaurant will be open for late-night service, though, with the kitchen closing around midnight.
The space itself will seat about 200 people inside, with an additional 20 tables available on the restaurant's patio. "Everybody loves the patio at El Burro Loco, so that should be great in the summer," Hernandez says. "Inside, it's going to be super fun and super authentic Mexican decor. We take trips down to Texas regularly and pick up authentic handmade Mexican items."
Look for doors at La Bamba to open by the first week of April.
La Bamba will be open daily from 11am to 1am.
