Most St. Louisans are familiar with Volpi Foods, having spotted the brand's cured meats, from heritage prosciutto to hot sopressata to coppa, on grocery store shelves or the occasional charcuterie board. But the fourth generation brand's store in the iconic Hill neighborhood also moonlights as one of the city's under-the-radar sandwich shops.
Here, you'll find an expansive retail selection of Volpi products, including some items that are exclusive to this location, such as luganiga (a traditional long, thin and coiled sausage). But if you want see Volpi's cured meats in action, make sure to pick up a sandwich.
Options range from the Prosciutto and Brie to a PLT (subbing pancetta for the requisite bacon), but you can't go wrong with Volpi's rendition of the classic po'boy. The sandwich comes stacked with the brand's own mortadella and salami, plus Provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pepperoncini with a drizzle of Italian dressing on Companion’s bada-bing roll.
Want to start your day off on the right foot? Stop by the Volpi store for a breakfast sandwich, which are available from 9am to noon. Options include the Pancetta and Egg Sandwich with crispy pancetta, fried egg, smoked mozzarella and mustard-mayo sauce on ciabatta and the Luganiga and Egg Sandwich with a luganiga patty, fried egg and Provel.
