Milque Toast Bar is back with its seasonal, locally focused toast dishes and new dinner hours with rotating thematic menus.
The McKinley Heights eatery, which originally debuted in 2015, closed its doors in March 2020, coinciding with the pandemic lockdown. Since then, owner Colleen Clawson has served as the chef behind sustainable prepared foods brand Nourish STL, which she co-founded last February. With the reopening of Milque Toast Bar, Clawson offers regular dinner hours for the first time; plus, she has a liquor license in the works.
“The dinners are monthly pop-ups,” Clawson says. “The first one was South City barbecue, and moving into September is Cajun fais do-do, which is Creole for a big party.”
The Southern-influenced menu will feature rotating items such as crawfish étouffée, shrimp remoulade and greens and sweet potatoes served with mushroom dirty rice, maque choux (Cajun corn salad) and cornbread – each available with andouille, blackened red fish and blackened tofu add-ons.
Themes for the rest of the year will include a southern France-inspired menu as well as the return of Clawson’s modern Indian bistro pop-up concept, Baba Xavi. While the dinner menu is only available in the evenings, toasts are available all day, including sweet and savory options on Bridge Bread Bakery bread. Choose from toppings such as fluffernutter, s’mores and truffle egg salad.
In addition to a revamped patio – complete with a stage and an outdoor kitchen – Milque Toast Bar also offers a grab-and-go case that features Nourish STL products and housemade items such as jams, jellies, pickled eggs and pudding cups. To drink, choose from canned and bottled options as well as housemade cream sodas and Milque Toast’s own medium-bodied coffee blend roasted by First Crack Coffee.
“It’s really nice to be back in our little urban oasis,” Clawson says. “I have to say that seeing all of our people again is the best part. I always say Milque Toast has the most amazing customers, and it really is true; they’re so sweet and kind, and I love getting to cook for them again.”
Brunch-lovers should also be on the lookout: A Sunday brunch, featuring a French toast bar, launches Sun., Sept. 19.
Milque Toast Bar is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm for breakfast and lunch and 5 to 9pm for dinner.
