This month, Springfield, Missouri's female brewers are toasting to International Women's Day with a new beer.
The Pink Boots Society is a coalition of women in the beer industry consisting of brewers and bartenders, writers, designers and marketers. The organization focuses on industry education, offering women the opportunity to connect and even earn scholarships for on-site training through brew houses and affiliates. As of 2017, Pink Boots Society had 45 chapters, including 35 in the U.S. and 10 international. As of 2019, that number will be growing by at least one, thanks to the efforts of Jennifer Leonard of Tie & Timber Beer Co. and Carol McLeod of Hold Fast Brewing.
McLeod is opening Hold Fast this summer with her sister, Susan McLeod, and Leonard has been the brewer behind Tie & Timber’s best-selling beers since she opened the brewery with her partner, Curtis Marshall, last spring. Together, the women share a passion for building Springfield’s growing craft beer community. McLeod and Leonard have both been part of the national Pink Boots Society, and they are excited to co-lead a chapter in Springfield.
“[Leonard] has been so welcoming to Susan and me as fellow brew owners,” says McLeod. “It’s very empowering to be part of this community, and I’m so excited for all of us to get together and gain knowledge.”
In the spirit of synergy, Leonard hosted a gathering of women involved in Springfield’s growing beer industry to create a custom brew celebrating International Women’s Day. Representatives from Hold Fast, Tie & Timber, Great Escape Beer Works, Mother’s Brewing Co. and Lost Signal Brewing Co. teamed up to create a Berliner Weisse-style beer that will be available at Tie & Timber and partnering locations later this month. The low-ABV beer features a bit of lime zest and cherry sour, reminiscent of a cherry limeade. Leonard describes it as “light and tart, with an effervescence to welcome in spring.”
Springfield Brewing Co. is also creating a custom beer to be released this Friday for International Women’s Day. At 5pm, the brewery will tap the Strawberry Milkshake Ale, containing notes of strawberry and vanilla and dispensed with nitrogen for a smooth drinkability. A portion of both Springfield Brewing Co. and Tie & Timber’s custom beers will be donated to the Pink Boots Society, with 50 percent of the donation to benefit the local chapter.
“Doing the Pink Boots collaboration with Hold Fast Brewing is another example of our motto ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’”, says Leonard. “It’s been awesome working with these ladies and learning from one another. This is exactly what Pink Boots stands for, and I am excited about the opportunities our local Pink Boots chapter will offer.”
