Modern Brewery Tasting Room Opens

The first sign you’ve arrived at Modern Brewery’s tasting room in the Kings Oak neighborhood of St. Louis is a matte-black vintage Chevy bearing the red-and-white logo. Head through the gated parking lot past some industrial buildings, and look for a relatively nondescript door that leads to a similarly nondescript tasting room. (Peek next door, and you’ll see its brewing facility.)

President and chief executive officer Beamer Eisele and head brewer Ronnie Fink (both hometown boys who boast impressive beer-brewing résumés) are more focused on their beers than tasting-room décor. Against the space’s southern wall, you’ll spot 12 of Modern’s brews on draft, illuminated by the brewery’s signature lightbulb-shaped tap handles, plus a couple rotating guest taps.

Modern first hit the St. Louis craft-beer scene in August 2014, and its beers are now available in around 100 bars and restaurants in the area. The tasting room opened in November 2015, offering Modern’s loyal following a place to sip flagships including Citropolis, a citra-hopped IPA, and Modern Saison, as well as seasonals like Arkham’s Finest, a coffee-chocolate American stout; The Heeler APA; and limited barrel-aged brews.

Only open 12 hours a week, (Friday and Saturday from 4 to 10pm), the tasting room doesn’t serve food, but you’ll often find a couple of food trucks stationed outside. Bring eats inside, and snag a spot at one of the tasting room’s community tables – or if you can’t stick around, take beer to go in growlers or 32-ounce crowlers. (Photo by Judd Demaline)
